One of the unique features of the SUTD curriculum is the concept of a 2D project, one that requires students to integrate the technical content of two or more courses. In ESD, our 2D project requires students to identify an industrial or commercial client who faces an operational problem, and to bring to bear on it the analytical tools covered in our Manufacturing and Service Operations course. Typically, these problems require either capacity analysis or inventory optimization. But to provide real answers to the client, the students must transform the client’s data into either forecasts or insights. That’s where the second course, Statistics, comes in. And so, in one semester, our students must develop a relationship with a client, find a relevant opportunity to add value to the client, collect and interpret data, and synthesize the tools from two complementary domains into a meaningful solution.
